The Electrical Contractors Association of New Zealand (ECANZ) has announced the finalists of the 2013 ECANZ Excellence Awards. Hall Electrical is proud to celebrate becoming a finalist in the Lighting Category. Congratulations to the Hall Electrical team!

Judging was completed in June with the finalists announced shortly afterwards. The finalists will attend an awards dinner held at the Langham Hotel in Auckland on Friday 23rd of August. The winners will be announced at the awards dinner. Not only is it wonderful for the Hall Electrical team to be recognised, it’s also exciting for our clients.

Electrical Excellence with a Residential Electrical Project
In contrast to the other finalists, Hall Electrical entered a residential home in the awards. Most of the other 17 finalists (3 finalists for each of the 6 categories) have entered work based on commercial projects. The home we entered utilises a number of interesting design elements that set it apart from standard homes. To view more details about the Karaka Homestead

Earlier this year, Hall Electrical Senior Apprentice, Markham Jefcoate entered the ECANZ challenge. The ECANZ (Electrical Contractors Association of New Zealand) Challenge is an electrical industry competition to find the NZ Electrical Apprentice of the Year. We are proud to announce Markham received the 3rd highest score in the Auckland Region for the Domestic/Commercial category.

Contestants in the regional round of the national award competition were put through a series of practical tests and challenges. Such tests are designed to simulate real world situations and highlight ‘outstanding individuals with a flair for either domestic/commercial or industrial work.’ Markham did himself and Hall Electrical proud by performing extremely well in a number of these tests. Congratulations Markham!

The ECANZ Challenge is one way apprentices can test themselves and receive recognition as top performers. It is also a great motivation for younger members of the team to entry the competition in subsequent years. Hall Electrical has recently taken on a number of Junior Apprentices, so we look forward to challenging our Apprentices to compete in the years to come.

Hall Electrical has taken on a new Senior Apprentice Electrician. Welcome to Markham Jefcoate. Markham has come to Hall Electrical after completing a large part of his Apprenticeship with an old employee of Hall Electrical. Markham has a high skill level and strong customer service focus. Both attributes fit well with Hall Electrical’s company culture.

Markham previously worked as a building labourer before he decide to go to tech and start the process to become an electrician. This has given him a good understanding of the building process, particularly home and commercial renovation projects.

Electrician for Switchboard Repairs: burning smell at the switchboard, electrical switchboard faults, switchboard not working, faulty switchboard, fault finding, and switchboard replacement.

First, it is important to mention; a faulty Switchboard can be extremely dangerous. If there is a burning smell at your Switchboard, please phone us urgently! Other faults may be less urgent; however, they can be very frustrating when they disrupt power to parts of your home or building.

Electrical Switchboards are one of the most vital components of electrical power circuits in both residential homes and commercial buildings. They are really the heart of the electrical circuit, distributing power through the home or building. In many multi-tenancy / multi-story buildings (both apartment blocks and commercial buildings) each floor or unit title will likely have a switchboard.

Wiring to, from and within the Switchboard
Power often runs through electrical wiring from the street to an outside Circuit-board, then to the inside Switchboard. In other properties power runs directly from the street to a single Circuit-board / Switchboard. Within the Switchboard, power is split into a number of different electrical circuits, each with its own circuit breaker or fuse. Electrical wiring then takes power through-out the property. Faults at the Switchboard can often be related to wiring either at the point of contact with other fittings or the actual wire itself. We can test the power supply to isolate the issue. Where possible we will repair the issue.

Fuses within the Switchboard & time decayed Switchboard Units or Circuits
In many older homes and buildings, switchboards contain a number of fuses. Fuses were primarily used before circuit breakers. It is not uncommon for many of the electrical issues coming from the switchboard to be directly linked to older style fuse failures. Normally a straightforward and quick repair can be done to resolve such issues in the immediate term. However, overtime electrical components, fittings and wiring can decay. Switchboards are not immune to this issue. It is worth noting that at some stage it will become a necessary task to replace the switchboard, the individual components inside the Switchboard, and perhaps re-wire the property.

Our Auckland wide team of registered master electricians have experience resolving Switchboard faults and providing electrical repair services. We have also completed a number of Switchboard upgrades when the unit or circuit is beyond repair and a replacement switchboard needs to be installed.

Electrician for Vanity & Bathroom Light Repairs: vanity light repairs, bathroom lights not working, bathroom spot lights faulty, bathroom mirror lights not working, fault finding, wiring repairs, & bathroom light fitting replacement

We understand that when you are without full lighting in the bathroom, you really notice it. If your vanity light (bathroom mirror light) is not working correctly the fault needs to be diagnosed by an electrician who can then complete a repair or install a replacement.

Vanity & Bathroom Light Fault Finding
If the light fitting is not working at all, an electrician will test the operation to isolate the issue. The most common issue is the light fitting has over time reached the end of its safe and useful life. Other common issues in the bathroom include faulty electrical points and wiring around the fitting. Water and electricity do not mix. Less common, but not unheard of, are issues with the power supply at the switchboard or something else within the specific electrical circuit.

Vanity & Bathroom Light Replacement
Replacing the light fitting is often the best option with older bathrooms. New light fittings come in a wide range of styles, configurations and the options can seem endless. We can help recommend a fitting to work in your bathroom.

Vanity & Bathroom Light Repairs

If the fault is traced to the electrical points or wiring at the fitting, and the light fitting is still in safe operational condition, a repair can sometimes be untaken without replacement of the fitting. This will resolve the issue quickly and get you back to full bathroom lighting.

Our Auckland wide team of registered master electricians have experience resolving many bathroom lighting repairs. We have also completed a number of electrical installations for bathroom renovations.

Electrician for Power Point Repairs: Power Points not working correctly, fault finding, wiring repairs, power point replacement

Electrical components like power points and wiring don’t last forever. Over time the power point fitting itself may become faulty and require repair or replacement. In other cases the fault may be traced to no power arriving to that particular power point.

Power Point Fault Finding
An initial diagnostic and testing process will help to determine the cause of the fault and the action required to resolve the issue. An electrician will run through a series of checks to ensure than there is a stable power supply to the power point. If the initial diagnostic determines that there is power supply issue it could be the wiring, a fuse, a circuit breaker, the switchboard or something else within the specific electrical circuit.

Power Point Repairs
Replacement is normally a better option than repair for power point fittings. However, in some cases, where safety is not compromised, repair may be a fast and affordable option.

Power Point Replacement
When the fault is traced to the power point fitting, and it is not able to be repaired cost effectively or safely, replacement is the best option. Power points come in a range of sizes, specifications and colours. For more information on details regarding larger installation projects and upgrades for power points, sockets and outlets visit our specific webpage regarding this service offering.

Electrician for Interior Light Repairs: Downlights, Ceiling Lights, Wall Lights, Spot Lights, Hall Lights, Stair Lights, Bathroom Lights, Kitchen Lights, Halogen Lights, LED Lights

When your lights are not working correctly (or at all), and it’s not the bulb, you’ll need an electrician to test the electrical circuit and repair the fault. Common faults with interior lights include faulty light fittings and components. These can often be resolved by simply replacing part or all of the light fitting. Other issues may require more extensive repair and replacement.

The age of the components within the electrical circuit may also be a factor in identifying the fault. Within both residential properties and commercial buildings the age of the electrical wiring, switchboard, light fittings and fixtures all have an impact on the performance of lighting. It could be more cost effective and safer to replace a number of the components to ensure faultless operation of interior lights. Common interior light repairs include;

Downlight Repairs
Downlight repairs have become a rather common need in many homes and businesses. Often the fault occurs simply because of a downlight fitting failure. When building or renovation work is originally undertaken, average quality downlights are sometimes installed to keep the cost of the entire project down. Replacing with new fittings can quickly resolve and repair the issue. In fact, new downlight regulations came into effect in May 2012 which help improve the standard of downlight installations.

Spot Light Repairs
Kitchens are a common location for spot lights. Both wall and ceiling mounted spot lights come as single, double, triple and quad fittings. When the fitting has multiple spot lights, it is often easilier to see if it is the fitting or power supply causing the issue. If replacement is the best solution, there is the option to replace with newer style halogen spot lights.

Ceiling & Wall Light Repairs
Ceiling & wall lights depend on both the age of the fitting and the purpose of the light. Regardless of the light fitting (claw, fluorescent, surface or hanging) the process starts with testing the electrical circuit.

Our Auckland wide team of registered master electricians are experienced with interior lighting repairs and installations for residential property and commercial buildings.
