There has been a lot of confusion regarding whether or not you cab get an electrician during lockdown in Auckland. So, we’ve put together a guide to help cut through the confusion. After all, electrical faults can be dangerous, so it is important an electrician can make a hasty repair.
Essential Services can operate during lockdown.
As you may already know essential services are permitted to operate during lockdown levels 4. Electricians are included under the essential service umbrella. However some services electricians provide are not considered to be essential, and therefore cannot be conducted during lockdown. We are still available to carry out emergency and urgent electrical working during level 4 lockdown.
When an electrician is needed the people of Mt Eden call Hall Electrical. For the last four decades, we have been installing, repairing and upgrading the homes and businesses of Mt Eden. From simple power point replacements to full home rewiring we have completed every job thinkable in Mt Eden with signature Hall Electrical quality.
Recently, a previous Mt Eden customer was looking for an electrician and gave us a ring. The constant covid-19 lockdowns in Auckland had left this customer working from home more often than not. Furthermore, their Wi-Fi signal was not sufficient to reach their home office. So we were called to install an ethernet wall socket.
What is an ethernet wall socket?
Ethernet is the internet cable that connects directly from your internet modem to your computer or smart TV. Some advantages of a wired connection include:
– Faster internet speeds, up to 10gb/s with some cables
– More secure than Wi-Fi
– Consistent connection, as Wi-Fi is susceptible to interference
On top of these benefits, an ethernet connection can go a longer distance than Wi-Fi. Because of these reasons, this Mt Eden customer decided to install an ethernet socket in their office.
To install an ethernet wall socket an ethernet cable needs to be run through the walls from the modem to the location of the new socket. Halfway through the job, the Mt Eden customer asked to install an additional socket behind their TV. We were happy to accommodate this request and installed an additional socket.
Overall, the Mt Eden customer was extremely happy they had called Hall Electrical to be their electrician. Now they were able to do their work without having to deal with bad Wi-Fi. Performing an upgrade to your electrical switchboard may be more important than you realise. In 2019 New Zealand reported a 22 percent increase in electrical fires, a high number of which were caused by faulty or old electrical wiring. Electrical switchboards are often the first line of defense against electrical fires, but in many homes, switchboards are instead the culprit.
What causes electrical fires.
Roughly 1000 homes burn down in New Zealand every year due to electrical faults. Many factors may contribute to an electrical fire, however most professionals agree a lack of RCDs (residual current devices) are usually to blame.
Many Auckland homes were built long before electrical switchboards were common practice. These older New Zealand homes use porcelain or wire fuses instead of more advanced RCD circuit breakers. Having to replace a blown fuse allows room for human error. If a fuse with the wrong current rating is installed it may fail to trip when needed. Resulting in overheating, damage to appliances or even fire.
Older switchboards are not capable of powering the more demanding and numerous appliances we use in our modern homes. An electrical switchboard upgrade can protect your home from becoming overloaded, avoiding a fire.
Hall Electrical is here to help.
Hall electrical can help you upgrade your electrical switchboard. Old homes with fuse boxes may need to be completely rewiring to replace the old compound wiring, which is more susceptible to fire.
If your home already has a full electrical switchboard but you are notice any of the following, your switchboard may need an upgrade.
Signs of a faulty electrical switchboard:
Circuit breakers tripping
Visible scorch/burn marks on wall sockets or switchboard components
Don’t wait until its too late. Protect your home and your family from a domestic house fire through an electrical switchboard upgrade. Call Hall electrical at 0800 422 973 or contact us online for a quote.
